The easy map draws the Gulf as a single bowl and Latin America as a single green mass with one capital, which is never named because the illustrator was not sure. That map is useful for a logo and useless for a paper. Qatar is not Saudi Arabia. Brazil is not Honduras. A deal signed in Abu Dhabi does not happen to “the Arabs”, and a election in one republic is not the mood of a continent.
We will name the place at the resolution we actually know. If the source says “the region”, we will not upgrade it to a country. If we mean a port, we will name the port when the document names it. If we do not know which port, we will not choose the famous one for music.
Flat maps also flatten responsibility. A firm has a registry. A ministry has a name. A people is not an actor in a sentence unless the piece is honestly about a people, which is a harder piece than a deal, and should look like it.
